As local construction firms ramp up for what is expected to be a busy summer, hiring managers have their eyes focused on folks with certain talents.
“The one attribute that transcends all roles in the company is an absolute appreciation for excellent safety performance, said Chris Buckman, Vice President of Corporate Construction, BMWC Constructors Inc. He emphasized that this attribute is a condition of employment.
His most difficult positions to fill? Project Managers, Schedulers, Estimators, Safety and Quality Professionals. Buckman also said that “experienced Field Supervisors and Welders are also in very high demand and difficult to find.”
John Dudlicek’s hard to fill list was even more specific. Dudlicek is Vice President at Grimmer Construction; the company website for the Highland-based firm says it specializes in “deep, wet and complex utility work.”
“We’re always looking for back hoe excavators for our deep sewer work. That worker is the key production person,” says Dudlicek. “Digging is just a part of the job; the heavy equipment operator must also know how to properly work around live utilities like gas mains and electric lines.” An experienced backhoe operator can earn $42.00 an hour plus benefits. He also says that a “bottom man” laborer is the heartbeat of the crew and can command an hourly wage of $36.00 an hour plus benefits. Dudlicek says a bottom man laborer is the person in the trench performing multiple tasks, operating a variety of power tools, is physically strong, and works with a variety of skilled workmen.
BMWC has a full time recruiting manager who is always looking for great talent to bring on board.
Buckman say their best workers possess a strong work ethic, a “passion for the construction industry”, are team players and also understand the importance of doing a great job for the company. “A willingness to help others—even when it may not be your responsibility—is another attribute we look for,” said Buckman.
In May, Grimmer will start hiring to supplement its regular workforce, and Dudlicek says they prize candidates who have an appreciation of the company’s bottom line. “To stay in business and provide jobs, we need to make money,” said Dudlicek.” “When I meet candidates who possess that mindset, I know that worker will be an asset to Grimmer.”
