THE CHALLENGE
After working as a Dental Lab Tech assembling dentures for the last 20 years, Sherrie Golden abruptly lost her job. Remaining positive about her job loss, she saw this as her opportunity to change careers. Interested in Phlebotomy, Golden came to her local WorkOne office in Portage for training and career counseling support.

THE SOLUTION
While Golden did have previous lab experience, she didn’t have the skills to become a Phlebotomist. She needed to attend phlebotomy training to learn the skills, techniques, and procedures of a Phlebotomist. Golden qualified for a scholarship from WorkOne for phlebotomist training through Medical Career Academy in Portage. In addition to training, Golden needed assistance with writing a resume and practicing her interviewing skills. Between training and attending WorkOne’s free career readiness workshops, Golden was ready to begin her job search in a just a few months.

THE OUTCOME
After Golden successfully completed training, she began the search for her new career. Confident and ready to get back to work, she started attending hiring events throughout the community with local healthcare providers. Golden was hired by Methodist Hospitals as a Phlebotomist after attending one of their hiring events. Due to her previous lab experience and training, Golden was offered a higher wage than most entry-level phlebotomists.
